109. Sunday Scaries

Temetria McVea Episode 109

In this episode of the 'Curate Your Life' podcast, Temetria delves into the concept of the 'Sunday Scaries'—the anxiety many people feel as they anticipate the upcoming week. She discusses the origins of this term, the psychological impact of negative thoughts about Monday, and how reframing those thoughts can reduce anxiety. Temetria emphasizes that the feelings of dread are largely due to the stories we tell ourselves. She offers insight into how coaching, planning, and journaling can help shift our perspectives to create a more fulfilling life. Temetria also talks about an upcoming three-part series about the 'Curate Your Life Process' aimed at helping clients achieve a life they love.

So I heard friends use this term a few years ago talking about either their daughter or their son, I can't remember, but it was about that anxiety on Sunday nights and they called it the Sunday Scaries, and I thought. That is the perfect term to describe it. That dread of Monday and the week ahead. And it was so perfect because I had felt that way before and I thought they had made it up. I thought they'd made the term up. And you've probably felt that way before too. You've probably had that feeling of, of dread on Sunday night, maybe last night, because I'm actually recording this on Monday, but it seems to set in around 6, 7, 8 o'clock. And you start to have that feeling in the pit of your stomach about the upcoming week, and you have that dread and just kinda low level anxiety or maybe even high level anxiety. But they call it the Sunday scaries and I, it was a few years before I realized that it was actually a thing. Well, not that it was actually a thing. I knew it was a thing because it was something that I had experienced, but that it was a widely used term out in the world. So fast forward to coaching and standing, how our thoughts cause our feelings, and I've talked about that before, and how planning and journaling and things like that can help with this and then I heard it again last night, and because I've been spending a lot of time thinking about being focused and engaged and taking purposeful action in your life, I spent some time thinking about it and about why it's so widely talked about. And why so many people experience this. So one reason I believe is because you can probably get a lot of buy-in from family and friends because it's a pretty common thing and people love to commiserate. So I feel like it's a, a popular topic of com to commiserate on. Another reason is the words. It's the story that we're telling ourselves about the week that's coming up. It's the way we're framing it, the negative thoughts and the actual words that we're using that cause the anxiety, our thoughts cause our feelings. So if you're dreading Monday thinking it's gonna suck, and the week is going to be crazy and busy and nonstop, and you don't know how you're going to get it all done, you're going to feel dread and anxiety. Those thoughts cause real emotion and physical sensations in your body, but it's not Monday or the week ahead of you. It's the way you're framing it. And even if you believe that those thoughts are absolutely true, and you can give me. A list of reasons why. I want you to know that they're optional. You can change those thoughts. You can start to pick them apart and question them. That's one of the things that we do in coaching. Examine those thoughts and get you to why you think them, and I'm not necessarily trying to get you to change your thoughts just to help you understand why you're thinking them. And then you decide if you wanna keep thinking them and feeling that way, or if you wanna practice new thoughts, but you'll begin to understand that in this case, it's not the Sunday scaries or the upcoming week that's causing the emotions and the anxiety. It's the story, the emotion that you're putting on it that's causing the feelings about your job or your obligations for the week. Because the job or the obligations are just circumstances, and you can start to reframe that even if you can't go from its crap to its rainbows and daisies, you can get to a neutral place about how you feel about it. And with some work, maybe even to a place to where you feel good about it. And you might not think it's possible because again, I know I've had those feelings before. On Sunday, I can vividly remember like having those feelings in the pit of my stomach. On Sunday nights, and I really thought it was because of Monday in the upcoming week, and now I know it was the stories behind it, but those thoughts are optional and you can begin to shift them and get to a better place, I promise you. A place where you don't have the Sunday scaries. Get to a place where it's neutral again, where you may not love it all the way, but you can be right here and not have the Sunday scaries and fun fact, you can do that with anything, not just the Sunday scaries, but with anything in life. So those are two reasons. One. You get something out of the commiserating with friends and family about it and the world in general. I saw this on tv. I can't remember what it was that I was watching, but it was a commercial or something that I saw on tv. And then the other reason is the thoughts, the stories that you have about Sunday and the week ahead. And the third reason basically boils down to thoughts also, but it's because you're not living the life that you want. There's a disconnect between the life that you're living and the life that you want. And even if you can't put your finger on exactly what it is you want out of life, there is a disconnect because think about this. Have you ever had the Sunday scaries before you left for a big vacation on Monday morning? Or even if you weren't going on vacation, if, if, if it was a staycation or you were just staying at home? We had Labor Day a few weeks ago. Did you feel the Sunday Scary Zen? No. So it's not Monday. It's the story. It's the thoughts, it's the feelings about the week ahead, about the Monday. So the work is to get to the why of those stories, why that's your story, your feeling about Monday. And the week ahead and what you can do about it. So this episode is short, something I just wanted to talk about today, but it's leading into something else. I was going to start a three-part series today that's a deep dive into the curate Your life process. The process that I've crafted to help clients get to a place where they're loving their life, they're creating lives that they really love. So I was gonna start that series. This week. But again, I saw the commercial about the Sunday scaries and wanted to talk about that and thought it would really be a good way to lead into that series. So that's where we are. So I want you to think about if you did have the Sunday scaries yesterday, think about Monday and how it actually went compared to the feelings you were feeling on Sunday. Was it as bad as you thought? And if so, why? What were the actual facts of the day? Was your boss really irritating and your coworkers really idiots? Or did your boss just have a request and did your coworkers maybe miss an email or just have a question? Do you see how easily the story can change how you feel about things? Did you have a commute from hell where nobody knew how to drive? Or did you really just have to go from point A to point B with a lot of other people? What I want you to understand is your thoughts and your actions are choices. All of life is a choice. What you think about Sunday night and the week ahead is a choice. So you get to decide if the week ahead is a good week or a bad week, if the day is going to be a good day or a bad day. They're all choices, but you have to practice making the choices that create the life that you want. So be sure to come back next week because the Curate your life process will help you do just that. Until next time.
